Myofascial Release
What Is John F. Barnes Myofascial Release?
John F. Barnes Myofascial Release (JFB-MFR) is a gentle, safe, and profoundly effective form of manual therapy that targets the fascia—the body’s connective tissue network that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, organs, and every cell. Trauma, inflammation, repetitive stress, emotional wounding, and poor posture can all cause fascial restrictions that lead to pain, limited mobility, and dysfunction.
Unlike traditional massage or force-based bodywork, Barnes MFR applies sustained, hands-on pressure and time—often 5 minutes or more—to allow the fascial tissue to release naturally. This technique respects the body's innate wisdom and healing capacity, engaging both physical and emotional layers of tension. Clients may experience not only physical relief but also emotional releases and deep insights.
How It Works
The fascia, when restricted, can exert up to 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch on muscles, nerves, and organs, causing pain and limiting function. Because these restrictions do not appear on standard tests like X-rays or MRIs, they often go undiagnosed. John Barnes’ approach is unique because it treats the body as a whole system and addresses the root causes of pain—not just the symptoms.
By gently “melting” through these restrictions with sustained pressure, the tissue unwinds and resets. This process facilitates profound healing, restoring freedom of movement, relieving chronic pain, and allowing for emotional and energetic realignment.
What to Expect During a Session
Clients remain comfortably clothed during treatment. Please wear shorts and a sports bra that is clasped in the back; ladies and men just need shorts. Sessions are individualized and may include:
Gentle, prolonged holds and stretches
Quiet moments of deep stillness and tissue release
Emotional or energetic shifts as the body lets go of stored tension
A sense of being truly “heard” by your body and therapist
Clients often describe the experience as deeply relaxing, grounding, and even transformational. No force or manipulation is ever used—only patience, intuition, and presence.
Who Can Benefit from MFR?
John Barnes MFR can support those dealing with:
Chronic pain or tension
Fibromyalgia
Autoimmune diseases
Migraines and headaches
TMJ dysfunction
Back, neck, and joint pain
Pelvic and women’s health issues
Post-surgical or post-injury recovery
Emotional trauma and somatic holding patterns
It’s especially valuable for individuals who feel like they’ve “tried everything” with little relief. MFR addresses pain at its source—within the fascial web—and supports long-lasting change.
